History

A heritage along the river

From ancestral homelands to the formation of the 21st district of Arunachal Pradesh.

  1. Ancestral

    Homelands along the Siang

The valley has long been the homeland of the Adi, Galo, Memba, Khamba and Idu Mishmi communities. Their oral traditions, clan structures and ritual practices trace settlement and migration along the Siang River — the upper course of the Brahmaputra.

  2. River & Trade

    A corridor through the mountains

Footpaths along the river and high passes such as Kepang La connected the hill communities of the upper Siang with neighbouring regions, sustaining exchange of salt, textiles, metalwork and ritual goods between valleys.

  3. Frontier Heritage

    Guarding the northern edge

Pemako, Tuting and Gelling sit close to the international boundary and have long held strategic and spiritual significance. Today Gelling stands recognised as the First Vibrant Village of India.

  4. Statehood

    Arunachal Pradesh & connectivity

After Arunachal Pradesh attained full statehood, road networks gradually opened the Siang belt — bringing administration, education, healthcare and visitors deeper into the valley.

  5. 1994

    Birth of Upper Siang District

On 23 November 1994, Upper Siang District was formed as the 16th district of Arunachal Pradesh with district headquarters at Yinkiong.

  6. Today

    A quiet tourism awakening

The valley is gaining recognition for responsible, low-impact tourism centred on its river landscapes, indigenous cultures, Buddhist heritage in the Pemako region and India's frontier story at Gelling.
